Stitching for Comfort...
Beverly Brophey Turner
We have all been touched by someone fighting breast cancer. My mother-in-law passed away in 1990. At the time she was diagnosed in the 1980's, minimal treatment was given. It was treated when detected and then it was a 5 year "watch". It came back just under the 5 yr mark but by then it had spread through lymph nodes to the lungs and bones. It seemed like at that time we heard about more women being diagnosed and the survival rate was not so promising.
Every year I meet women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and fight it effectively. Mastectomies are often an option in the treatment as it was with my mother-in-law. The treatment for cancer is a process that is most often not pleasant but necessary for future health. The least we can do as friends and supporters is to offer comfort. This past summer, I was introduced to a project called "Comfort Stitches" founded by a fellow industry colleague in Tennessee, Diane Preston. (See piece below about "Comfort Stitches") This August I made 30 tube bags as part of an industry wide initiative.
Over the past 20yrs+ of sewing, I have collected a fabric stash of remnants from left-over or abandoned projects. I have continuously searched for projects to utilize my stash in a meaningful way. I feel "Comfort Stitches" Bosom Buddy pillow and tube bags are a perfect use for my stash. A suggestion by an industry colleague and survivor of breast cancer herself, was to provide 2 tube bags. One to get wet in the shower and the other can be kept dry. So I have put together sets of "Comfort" that include one Bosom Buddy Pillow and 2 Tube bags. If you are or know someone who needs some "Comfort Stitches" please accept a set to help you in your treatment. They can be picked up from me in Dover, NH or shipped to you or the recipient at the cost of shipping and handling only. Please use the order section below and fill out all the information so we can provide a personal note. The inventory and selection will change based on remnants I have on hand at the moment and time available to fabricate.

About "Comfort Stitches"
"CRAFTING ITEMS TO HELP SOOTHE THOSE WHO ARE HEALING"
Born out of a heart to help those whose journey has taken them to a place of challenge, Comfort Stitches knows that the small work of each willing hand, with God’s help, can multiply into a great work of compassion and caring for those struggling with cancer.
Comfort Stitches is an outreach of area drapery workrooms and caring individuals to provide products to cancer patients in an effort to help them along their journey. Handmade items include “Bosom buddy” pillows, heart pillows, tube bags and chemo caps to name a few. These items are made with love and care from mostly up-cycled fabric remnants.
“Friend, uncommon joy is coming your way. The kind of joy and gladness that comes in the morning after a night of weeping. Yes, the kind of joy that comes when that which man calls impossible is made possible by God.” Cancer Prayer Team
