Stage Curtain
Domicil design has the resources to meet your stage curtain needs. Here are some basic details regarding stage curtains. Existing curtains can be sent out to us for a complete cleaning and repair, keeping the FR properties and extending the life of your stage curtain investment. Please do not send anything without a work order and approval by us prior to shipping.
FIRST STEP
We visit the job site and make final field measurements to produce curtains designed to properly mask the stage but you can also submit your own specifications. We are based in Dover, New Hampshire so please keep this in mind when consider getting a quote. We prefer to visit all job sites but we will also work with pre-specified projects. We can contract with a local installer to get the job up right.
CLASSIC & CUSTOM COLORS AVAILABILITY
Yes we can work with your custom colors, and will provide you with Lab Dips for your approval prior to the start of Fabrication.
FABRICATION DETAILS...in case you are wondering...
Here are the work room specifications for each fabricated stage curtain:
All curtains are to be box-pleated, a 6" pleat sewed down flat, on approximately 12" centers. Pleats shall be sewed on a double layer of vinyl-coated polyester weighing a total of 36 oz. per square yard, and permanently and inherently flame resistant. Material shall have a breaking strength of 252 lbs. warp, 237 lbs. fill, and a tear resistance of 76 lbs. warp and 82 lbs. fill. At both ends of all floor-length curtains, the heading material shall be turned back 4" and sewed down to provide a triple layer of heading at stress points. If jute or webbing heading is offered as an alternate, proof must be submitted with the bid that the alternate heading material has been treated to be flame resistant or is inherently flame resistant. Headings of all floor length curtains are to have three parallel rows of lock-stitching. Seams are to be hidden behind pleats. Place black brass grommets on each pleat and each top corner, set 1-1/4" from top of curtain. Provide a plated S-hook for each grommet. Provide a 2' 0" black tieline for curtains tied to batten.
All vertical seams shall be overlocked; no existing selvages of fabric are to remain on the curtains. Notched selvages are not acceptable.
AHEM...THE HEMS
Front curtain shall have 6" bottom hems. All other curtains shall have a 3" bottom hem. Floor length curtains shall be weighted with a series of galvanized steel weights encased in individual pockets within the bottom hem. Chain weights or lead weights are not acceptable.
Leading edges of all traveler curtains shall have a minimum turnback of 24" of face material. This turnback shall be formed by turning back 24" of material and sewing it across the top hem. No vertical sewing of the turnback shall be done. All other vertical hems shall be 2." Bottom hems of all curtains shall be sewed with lockstitching. Blind stitching is not acceptable on any part of any curtain.
FLAME RESISTANCE
All material must be flameproofed by immersion or permanently and inherently flame resistant. Each curtain will have sewn on the back, a label indicating type of flame resistance and dry cleaning instructions.
Letters & Emblems
Letters and emblems are made by embroidering chenille thread onto a heavy wool/rayon felt backing. Letters are available in the five letter styles or in custom styling to match any sample.
Standard sizes are 10,'' 12,'' 15,'' 18,'' 22,'' 24,'' 30,'' or 36,'' in a selection of 18 colors. About 1/2'' of the felt background projects beyond the chenille all around the letter, to allow sewing space. This enables you to select the color of the felt background as a different color from the chenille.
You could have, for example, a red letter with a white edging, OR a red letter with a matching red edging, either at the same price. Our skilled embroiderers can reproduce in chenille and felt any emblem or design, from the most simple to extremely detailed. 6'' BULLION FRINGE is available in white, black, antique gold or bright gold.
Fabric - COM (Customer's Own Material)
While we prefer to use our own materials to make curtains for you, and provide a 'delivered to your door' pricing that includes fabric, fabrication and freight, we realize that sometimes customers want their curtains made of a special fabric.
We will do C.O.M. work if we determine that we can work with the fabric. We may ask for a sample before quoting a price.
When we use your material, we inspect it carefully, mark off all the cuts, and insure that we have enough fabric before cutting your goods. If any problems develop, we will notify you at once for a solution. Any left over fabric is returned with the shipment of completed curtains.
Our one-year warranty will cover only our fabrication, not your fabric. Curtains made with C.O.M. receive our usual detailed inspection and packing, and are shipped with S-hooks and/or tielines.
In order to quote on C.O.M. jobs, we need to know the width of the fabric and any repeats. We can then tell you how many yards we will need and what the fabrication cost will be. The cost of the freight for shipping it to you is added to your cost.
We specialize in stage curtains and window draperies made of matching stage curtain materials.
Fabric Selection
We have all the materials for stage curtains, and give you a choice between cotton treated to be flame retardant, and polyester permanently and inherently flame resistant. All weights are per linear yard.
(IFR = inherently flame resistant, usually polyester fabric.)
Velour
CONSIDER IFR FABRICS, which are permanently and inherently flame resistant, do not have the spotting problems cotton fabrics have if water is spilled on them, and come in an attractive range of colors. IFR fabrics are only slightly more costly than FR cotton.

Custom Stage Curtain Dry Cleaning
Cleaning and, when necessary, repairing draperies ensure that your investment will last for many years. This is often not the best economical option if the curtains are more than 5 years old or have never been cleaned. Dry rot has already begun which weakens fabric and makes it difficult to clean and repair properly. If your curtains are older than 20 years, please consider replacement.
Our resource has one of the largest dry cleaning machines on the east coast USA to hold even large stage curtains. They have been cleaning and repairing stage curtains for years combined with manufacturing of stage curtains gives our customers the one stop CLEAN, REPAIR OR NEW stage curtains resource. Sometimes we can repair on-site.
Curtains of nearly any size can be dry cleaned without removing the flame retardant protection eliminating the need for expensive additional flame retardant treatment. Simply call us and we will take down the old curtains, box them up and send them out to be cleaned. Cost of a typical cleaning runs approximately half the cost of new.
Proper and Professional cleaning of stage curtains can significantly extend the life of the curtains. We recommend curtains be cleaned about every 5 – 10 years with regular vacuuming between professional cleanings for best possible longevity of your curtains.
Warranty
We make the following warranty to purchasers of our stage curtains:
We will repair or replace without charge any item which displays defective materials or workmanship within one year of the date of purchase, provided a written claim is made within the warranty period.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.
